In her first major interview, the painter Tanya Paut reflects on colour, memory and the long road to recognition after decades of working in relative obscurity.

Her canvases, dense with layered pigment, have lately drawn the attention of curators who once overlooked her.

"I never painted for the market," she says, laughing. "The market simply arrived, rather late, and found me already at work."
