Iran Frees Navy Veteran

The release of Michael K. White, held nearly two years, came a day after an Iranian scientist held in the United States was returned to Iran, in what officials on both sides described as a carefully choreographed exchange.

Mr. White, a Navy veteran, had been detained since 2022 on charges his family and the State Department called baseless.

Diplomats cautioned that the swap did not signal a broader thaw, but both governments left open the possibility of further talks.
